New: Home Assistant Snippets

New: Home Assistant Snippets

I’ve created a new GitHub repository for smaller Home Assistant projects, dashboard ideas and configuration snippets that are useful enough to share, but don’t necessarily justify becoming full integrations or HACS projects.

The new repository is:

Home Assistant Snippets

The idea is simple: each snippet lives in its own folder with a README, working YAML and any supporting files needed to reproduce it.

Frigate GenAI Event Browser

The first snippet is a small event browser for Frigate’s built-in GenAI results.

It listens to Frigate’s frigate/reviews MQTT topic and keeps a rolling history of recent GenAI events in Home Assistant.

The dashboard card shows:

  • Event thumbnail
  • AI-generated title
  • Full scene description
  • Camera and event time
  • Previous / Latest / Next navigation
  • A rolling history of the 10 most recent events

It works with Frigate’s GenAI output regardless of which AI provider is being used.

Frigate GenAI with Ollama Cloud

The second snippet documents how I’m currently running Frigate GenAI through Ollama Cloud using a small dedicated Ubuntu Server machine as the local Ollama endpoint.

The flow is:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
Frigate
   ↓
Local Ollama host
   ↓
Ollama Cloud
   ↓
Vision model

The local machine does not perform the model inference. It provides Frigate with a local Ollama API while Ollama Cloud handles the actual AI workload.

The guide covers:

  • Installing Ollama on Ubuntu Server
  • Authenticating with Ollama Cloud
  • Exposing the Ollama API on the local network
  • Connecting Frigate to Ollama
  • Testing the complete pipeline
  • Optional Ollama Cloud usage monitoring in Home Assistant

Why a snippets repo?

I already have standalone projects where that makes sense, but a lot of useful Home Assistant ideas fall somewhere in between a single YAML fragment and a full custom integration.

This repository gives those smaller projects somewhere sensible to live.

I’ll add more snippets as I build things that might be useful to other Home Assistant users.
